Committed to community service, Vargas serves as a champion of Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (HOPE), as a boardmember for the National Association of Latino Elected Officials (NALEO), and a boardmember for Run Women Run. She continues to be a passionate advocate for women and the Latino community, and ensuring they are included in the public dialogue about important issues like education, health care access and civic engagement.
Nora Vargas has spent her life working to dismantle barriers for underserved communities. She is inspired by the notion of creating change through civic engagement and public policy. The potential to improve people’s lives in her community, inspires Nora’s passion to serve. She currently serves as the VP of Community and Government Relations of Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest, where she is responsible for the development of the vision, strategy and funding of the department. Including the day-to day operations of the political arm of the organization.
Vargas was appointed and later elected to the Southwestern Community College District Governing Board, the only institution of higher education in the South Bay. Most recently, she was appointed by Governor Jerry Brown to serve on the 12-member California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) where she is charged with securing the financial future of California's educators, providing retirement, disability and survivor benefits for 862,000 educators and their families. Nora has served on numerous boards and commissions, locally and across the state of California.
